Some people miss the boat on Twitter

Don't kid us. If you are frequenting Twitter and you are older than 20 years old, then it is likely you are interested in marketing something. I think that is a fair assessment.

If you do what I do, you look to find "worthy" people to follow. You want to find people who are movers and shakers in your niche. You hope to learn things from them.

This morning I clicked on the link of one of the people I follow. She is known as "the communicatrix". In her link she was promoting a video she made that expresses why Southwest should pick her as their New Southwest Airlines Blog-O-Spondent.

Here is the link:
http://southwest.spigit.com/Sector/ViewThread?threadid=429

I think this is a great use of video to get viral attention. It is lots of fun to watch and it may even earn the communicatrix a new job. I hope so.

But here is my beef. I was about to send out a "retweet" that would show my 454 followers the link to this video. I don't know, but I believe this would help the communicatrix somehow, some way.

Golldarnit! She is not following me. So, what's the point of helping her? I am not saying that I am the most worhty person to follow, but that's what I thought. Eventually I decided to help the communicatrix anyway by putting the link on this blog. I think a retweet would have been more powerful since I know I won't get 453 crossovers to my blog from Twitter very soon.

Not only that, I could not send a message through Twitter because she chooses not to follow most of her followers.

My point is, don't be so stingy about following people. Some great people follow everyone who follows them. I think these people understand the inherent value.

Perhaps the handle should be changed to "The noncommunicatrix"?

Unless you are fearful of stalkers? If so, then you better just leave the Internet alone?

Please leave your comments. What is your opinion? I think it is bad form not to follow people who follow you. It is just plain snobbish. Should we limit the people we follow?

  1. I, personally, follow ALMOST every one who follows me yet do follow a few who do not return the follow IF what they have to say is relevant or interesting TO ME. I can then UNfollow any who cease to do so and do not take it personally if some UNfollow me later.

Just MHO and yes, I am an IM.

  2. I don't worry about whether someone I'm following follows me or not. It's no big deal.

There's people who follow me that I don't follow and that's for a number of reasons. Two of which are: they don't bother to tweet anything or their tweets are unkosher.

Everyone has their own reason for using twitter and there's no right or wrong reason to use it.

To me, to say how it should or should not be used is right up there with saying blogging should only be for making money and you're a weirdo and doing it all wrong if that's not your purpose. Which is totally absurd.

Cool! I just pulled off a long sentence and added a fragment! I feel proud. :]

  3. jan and yobeeone have a couple of interesting points there.

    How about an analogy:
Should we look at Twitter as an interactive community where everyone interacts with each other, OR should we look at Twitter as a bulletin board where everyone posts their thoughts, and you can decide whether or not you want to read them?

Not a perfect analogy...what would be a better analogy???

  4. Sure, anyone can use Twitter the way they want to.

I am just saying that if you are here for marketing (as most of us are) then you are missing the marketing boat if you don't follow the people who follow you.

Case in point is that I decided not to post on Twitter to help someone I don't know at all and never met.

  5. Educate, educate, educate. Which means communicate, communicate, communicate.

Call it networking and add enlightened self interest. Call it putting others first and add love and consideration.

My suggestion: Make your own decision, but look for creative ways to communicate with and educate this person. Avoid narrowing it down to questions of how to use the Twitter interface.

My site has a lot of unique content Ι've either authored myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any solutions to help stop content from being stolen? I'd certaіnlу appгеciate іt.
